My dog eats things out of our trash cans!!!?

I have a yorkshire terrior. When we are not here, she eats anything she can get out of the trash cans in our bathrooms. We shut the door but she just trys the kitchen trash can. Is there any way to stop her from doing this?

Do you give her enough normal food? Get lids for the trash cans or eat gross food.

Get a tall trash can with a lid.

There are cans that have the little foot peddle you step on to open the can. Those are great because they are heavy and can’t be opened by a small dog.

My dog had the same problem. When we leave now and at night we put the trash can in the laundry room and shut the door. We also keep the bath room trash in the cabinet under the sink. Now, if I can just get him to stop tearing up the kids’ toys and anything that gets left in the living room, my house will stay clean!!!!!!!!!!!

She may just have separation anxiety and she gets into the trash for something to do. My dogs get into everything when I leave. I have to make sure everything is put away properly.

my dogs are like that to and we don’t have a lid on our kitchen trash can so we put an old box over it to keep them from getting in it

Still keep the doors to the bathroom closed and put the kitchen garbage can under the sink. You could also by a tall steel garbage can with a lid that fits tight. She shouldn’t be able to reach that! Good luck. ;]

Get the trash cans with lids that are too heavy for her to open.

No matter how many times I corrected my dog for going near/in the trash can, when I am gone he always knocked it over and had a field day, until I got the covered one.

you should train her for not doing that plus when youre at home you should always take out all the trashes out of the house and replace into the trash can out side. and you should leave osme foods with water and toys for her so that she have something to eat, play when youre not home.

    don’t let him be hungry.

My beagle does this too. He has an insatiable appetite. We have to make sure that all the trashcans are up when we leave. It’s pretty annoying, but if you make yourself a reminder note (mine says “TRASH?”) on the door you frequently exit, then that should help you remember.

I feel your frustration. It’s totally gross, and bad for our little trash eaters!

We use to have this problem too.

    1. Before you leave the house. Put dabs of very strong hot
sauce on the rim of the trash cans. The odor of the sauce
smells real horrible to a dog. + the taste………..

This sounds like puppy behavior. You need to get a trash can that has a lid or be very diligent with training it not to do that. Let him know that if he wants a “treat” you will gladly reward him with good behavior.

easy- keep shutting the doors to your bathroom and you may also want to consider getting a trash can that is tall-since Yorkshire Terriers tend to be no more taller than 9in. If you have a tall trash can but the dog jumps up on it you might want to consider getting a lidded trash can. If all else fails relocate your trash can to a place where the door can be shut-just for a while until your dog stops his/her habit. :)
