How do I keep my dogs out of the trash can?
We always have food out for them, and they have raw hide bones at all times. I just don’t understand why they get into the trash can every day between the time when my husband goes to work and I get up. They even get into the trash can that has a lid so please don’t tell me to get one with a lid. My husband tried to put table pepper in the trash to deter them from getting in it, and that didn’t work. I’m at my wits end.

u can put the trash cans up to a higher place than the floor so the dogs cant get to the trash cans good luck!!!
Well I solved the problem with a trash can that hangs on the wall outta dog reach….
Other ideas: Bungee the lid down,
tiger balm is sometime enough deterrent
Put dog attractive trash such as food wrappers in a small can in a cupboard
Crate the dogs while you are not watching them.
Move the trash into a closet so they can not get into it.
Problem solved.
Dogs love trash they just do. It is more of an issue of getting the humans to move the trash that stopping the dogs. Most dogs given the opportunity will get into the trash. So take away the opportunity and the problem is solved.
Try Hartz Stay Off Training Aid. You spray it on the areas you want the dogs to stay away from. You can find it at Wal-Mart.
Good luck!
there are special sprays that you can buy that do not smell or taste very good to your dog but are completely harmless. you could try looking in one of your local pet stores where they sell dogs or you could go on line and buy it. One brand is called bio defend and its made with vinegar garlic and white pepper. its not very good for furniture and its normally used on lawns but it should work on your garbage can. This one I feel is the safest, alot of other sprays use chemicals.
just as a side note to Tlc. if your a trainer it doesn’t sound to me like you know what your doing. if you were trying to teach a dog to fetch, would you just never throw the ball in the first place? taking away the trash does not teach a dog to stay out of the trash and my dog does in fact know that the trash is off limits and will not get in to it.
I would also like to say that i do agree with crate training but that it should not be used as a punishment. the crate is a safe place for your dog and should feel like a SAFE zone. Be firm in your reprimands but once its gone in to its safe zone back off. constantly keep on the dog about the trash, it takes time but dogs are smart and eventually they will learn. I personally don’t like locking my dog up unless it cant be avoided. My dog is used for security so if she is protecting my home she cant very well do that from inside a cage.
the smell is driving them nuts from all the goodies they can eat. i keep my garbage in a cubboard so they can’t get into it or u might want to keep it in a higher spot to avoid the mess.with recycling i have different containers which sit on a table at my door and they can’t reach it not that they couldn’t because they are a pretty big breeds, when the cubboard is opened to pack up the regular garbage my husky trys to snoop but i always scold him and he backs off. u might have to use smaller bags and tie them tightly them put each one seperately in the can with the lid on and something heavy on top to keep them from getting the lid off. it is a bad habit and if there is no smell or a heavey lid they might start leaving the garbage alone. good luck
I’m sure you’ve already tried simply training them to stay away from the trash (it CAN be done). They’re probably doing it from either boredom or separation anxiety (from your husband’s departure). Determining the reason could help stop the action. You could put the trash can on the counter (I lived like this for years-it sucked) or you could try a different can. I bought a “bullet” can, and my dogs can’t get into it. I really love it. Mine was $50 at Target, but here’s a picture of what I am talking about: http://www.gilmorekramer.com/more_info/dometops/dometops.shtml
3 of my dogs are good about staying out of the trash, but one would dig every time you turned your back…this bullet can is much easier than trying to train it out of them.
