How do I keep my dog from eating trash?
In my neighborhood the trash is only collected once a week so sometimes I may have a bag full of trash next to the trash can because the outside trash can we have is full. Whenever I leave the house, I come back home to find trails of trash from the kitchen to the living room from the indoor feast that my dog (Bichon Frise- Pierre) had while I was gone. When he heres me come home, he hides and will sit at the top of the steps because he knows what he did was bad. So if he knows its bad, why does he do it? He is a very needy dog as far as attention, and he gets pleanty of it. So I don’t see why he would feel the need to do bad things. He gets fed regularly. How do I keep him from ripping holes in the trash bags and having a feast?
Ok I keep reading all of the wonderful answers about crates… Well my dog LOVES his crate and goes in there when I’m not home, but if I leave a trash bag in the kitchen, he tears it to shreds and has a feast. Not all dogs do this, so how can I train him not to eat the trash if I’m not there to witness him in the act? Cesare would have an answer, but I’m sure his services cost too much… so help me out guys!

lol my bichon used to do that. he did that cause he missed us, etc.
when everyone is gone in the house, we leave my dog in the kennel/crate. the most he stays there is about 2-3 hours, so its okay (Theres a waterbottle for dogs at the kennel.) and sometimes we throw in some snacks in there so that he can chew on/eat something while we’re gone.
Keep the trash can under your kitchen sink and close the door.
The only way to keep a dog out of the trash is to keep the trash in a place where the dog cannot get to it … period. If they can smell it, and can get to it, they’ll move heaven and earth to tear into it. I don’t know why, but the worse it smells, the more they love it.
um invest in another trash can and take your trash out!
He doesnt make the connection between getting in the trash, and you getting mad. He makes the connection that there is a mess and you get mad. He doesnt really understand that him getting in the trash makes a mess tho!
There is probably something tempting in the trash that attracts him.. Im sure there is nothing in the trash that he should have either!
Separate the trash and the dog. Either put the dog in a crate, or another room, or buy a covered trash can to keep the garbage bag in. You can’t set a bowl full of candy in front of a 5 year old, leave the house for a few hours, and expect the child to not eat the candy while you are gone. Why would you expect a dog to act any different?
Simple solution: stop leaving trash bags on the kitchen floor.
DON’T LEAVE THE TRASH WHERE HE CAN GET TO IT
dogs love anything stinky. if you ever notice after giving a bath it runs all over the house rolling. dogs hate to smell clean. being dirty was a way of hiding from preditors and their prey. never let the dog roll in the grass if you can catch him too – hell smell like poop, death, disaster.
same with the trash. there is something stinky in there he wants to eat. try putting dog gravey in his bowl. sauce his food up so he wants that instead of the nasty leftovers.
and yes, move your trash out of reach…
you cant punish a dog if you dont catch them in the act. he may know what he did was wrong but it doesnt mean he knows not to do it again. you can only aviod the situation now.
Do what I did…get rid of the dog!
He used to bring home everyone else’s trash.
And have a ball with it in the lawn.
And gak up papertowels, and chicken bones all over the house.
I got fed up. I do not believe in caging animals, even for a couple hours.
I found him a good home….somewhere else!

I guess all you really can do is either put the trash where your dog can’t get it or put your dog in a crate or closed room when you aren’t home. Good luck!
I agree with all the answers so far. There is nothing “cruel” about crating a dog, no mater HOW cute it or lovable it is.
Hey……..IT’S NOT THE DOG’S FAULT!!!
He won’t get into the trash if it’s not there to get in to. Perhaps you need to get another outside can?
How about trying to cut back on the amount of trash you produce each week? recycle?
Please don’t blaim the dog for something that is totally out of it’s control.
Be a responsible pet owner and take out the trash… before the day comes when you absently threw away something TOXIC into the trash and it kills your dog!!!!!!!!
Train the human before you punish the poor dog.
Try a travelers leash (when you are away from home) long enough for your pet to exercise but not long enough to reach the trash container. Attach the leash to a strong tree, or ground stake something the pet cannot undo.
several things, don’t put food scraps in the garbage, the dog may be bored or he may be mad because you went off and left him
get him a new toy to play with and only give it to him when you go out, can you put the garbage bag up on the counter or table so the dog can’t reach it? it’s really simple just place out of his reach, he’s a small dog
Sounds like he can’t get into the indoor trash can, just the bag of trash next to it right?
You may have to just get a second outdoor trash can.
Dogs are scavengers by nature and will eat what they come across. My dog likes to think he is starving even though he is in perfect shape.
