Home remedy for keeping the dog out of the trash can?
Our five month old puppy won’t stay out of the garbage can. I was wondering if anyone had any home remedies for keeping them out – vinegar? Ammonia? I’ve heard of these… Trash can with lid doesn’t work… He knocks it over or simply sticks his nose in and roots around for stuff. I don’t want him getting sick. Any suggestions?

put it out of his reach.
Move the trash can where he can’t get it.
You can put in lemon peels. Vinegar will do too or spray anti-mating spray around the rubbish can.
Move the trash to where he can’t get it.
” puppy proof your home”
put cayenne pepper in the trash can, just sprinkle it in their everywhere.
How about “putting the trash can somewhere that he can’t get to it” (i.e. in a cabinet, in the pantry, behind a door, behind a gate, etc.)?
Sometimes it makes more sense to simply remove the temptation than to try to dissuade the dog.
Use black pepper liberally. Dogs just do not like that stuff.
Hot pepper around the can lid. Worked for us.
The best (and only effective) home remedy is to put the trash can where he can’t get at it. Seriously. Nothing else will work.
You really don’t want your dog getting into the trash. It could prove fatal.
There are things called “Scat Mats” which give a dog a mild electric shock when they step on them. They’re fairly pricey and I don’t think very effective. I tried using one to keep my dog out of the living room (no door) and they just jumped over it.
A couple of options:
One, remove the trash from his reach – put it in a cupboard with one of those child safety locks to prevent the door from opening.
Two, get a motion sensor type correction device – there are several kinds available, even for kids. One kind makes a loud honking noise (to alert you and startle the dog) when someone goes by. Another lets out a loud(ish) puff of air. They even make “scat matts” which give the dog a little buzz around the paws (doesn’t hurt, just annoys.)
Note: with the above devices, get the automatic ones so they work even when you aren’t around. That way the dog doesn’t tie “correction” to you.
Three, use an old fashioned remote citronella collar and set it off when the dog goes near the trash can (not good if you can’t see the room OR set it off without the dog noticing you.)
Four, block off the rooms with garbage cans with baby gates.
